Grandpa's Thoughts

Thoughts about learning, family, business, generations and life from Dr. Richard B. Liposky.

Some lessons come from books. Others come from experience. Grandpa's Thoughts is a place to share both — observations, questions and lessons gathered over a lifetime as a surgeon, author, entrepreneur, businessman and Grandpa.

“We can’t understand others until we understand ourself. Who we are, the person in the mirror, is the first and toughest one to understand.”

Dumbing Down a Generation

How we did it. How we fix it.

We can’t understand others until we understand ourself. Who we are, the person in the mirror, is the first and toughest one to understand.

It took four generations to break it. It will take one generation to fix.

We broke it with a gradual cultural change. We fix it with cultural change.

“If you keep adding steps to ease the climb, eventually the last step will be the last step. There will be no place else to go but down. If you keep adding blocks to the foundation, your structure is only limited by how high you want to build.”

Your vision determines your destination. Eyesight shows what’s in front of you. Vision tells us what’s ahead, over the horizon.

About Grandpa's Thoughts

Lessons are meant to be shared.

Grandpa's Thoughts grows from a simple idea: experience has value when it is passed from one generation to the next.

Dr. Richard B. Liposky has spent a lifetime learning through medicine, business, entrepreneurship, writing, family and the relationships that shape a life. This is a place for observations about what we learn, how we learn and what may be worth passing on.

Like a conversation between a grandfather and a grandchild, these thoughts are not meant to provide every answer. They are meant to encourage curiosity, reflection and conversation.
